The two principal elements of a weight loss program are exercise and diet, and you can opt to manage all of it yourself or choose to put matters in someone else’s hands – so that your chief responsibility is just showing up.
Eating Well
If changing your eating habits drastically and changing your cooking habits as well seems overwhelming, you can opt for a program such as Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem that provides you with prepared meals; your job is limited to managing any microwave or oven chores. Weight Watchers will take you through the diet portion of your weight loss effort step by step as well. These diet programs provide good food with ample variety and without skimping. There are few accounts of being left hungry by people who have used these programs. They are not cheap, but they take the work out of preparing new recipes – you just have to stay away from the snacking.
Learning to Exercise
Every worthwhile weight loss program includes an exercise component. That can be as simple as a walk through the neighborhood or as elaborate as a personal trainer. Some people prefer to do this themselves, but many of us who have been living a sedentary life style aren’t quite sure how to go about it.
It’s worth your while to take a deep breath and join a gym. You can work with a trainer in order to learn the basics about the weight machines and develop a weekly exercise program with a knowledgeable professional. Most gyms provide this service with the cost of membership. In the early going, all you have to do is show up and let the trainer take you through your paces.
For aerobics you can begin by walking on a treadmill and eventually graduate to a Pilates class or some organized class event where you’ll probably make some friends. A gym can provide support and companionship when you’re venturing into alien territory.
Cooking at Home
Those are the turnkey weight loss options. The cheap weight loss food option ispicking one of the several million books on dieting that are out there and create your own menus. You can pick up the South Beach Diet, You on a Diet, The Abs Diet, Weight Loss for Idiots – all are best sellers. Each as a different approach – some count calories, some count carbohydrates, some just help you manage your daily meals. An appetite suppressant can provide a little protection from cravings if you’re doing this in your own kitchen.
Then there is the Adkins diet, which is a “net carbohydrate” approach to dieting and which includes shakes and protein bars provided by the Adkins Company. The Alli Diet is a recent arrival on the scene, put out in conjunction with the first “fat blocker” approved by the FDA for over the counter sale. Reviews on the drug’s performance are mixed, but the book itself is an excellent manual for a weight loss diet with plenty of nutritional information and multiple menu choices that make planning easy.
Exercise at Home
Home exercise shouldn’t be a challenge if you’re committed to it. For a lot of us, finding the time is tougher than finding the right exercise. There is home equipment you can purchase, exercise tapes (now DVDs) that work for some people, and maybe a bicycle in the garage that you can dust off and pump up the tires for.
