The thyroid is an often overlooked organ that plays a vital role in physiological function. It produces two important hormones which work together to regulate the metabolic function. They also have an impact on the development of a fetus, on long bone development and on an assortment of other developmental functions in the body.
Hypothyroidism is a malfunction of the thyroid that results in too little of these hormones being produced. The primary symptom for this affliction is the underperformance of the metabolic system. That means slower use of energy producing compounds such as carbohydrates, protein and fat.
The result is that many people suffering from a lack of thyroid hormone gain weight. People who undertake a weight loss program as the result of thyroid related weight gain should also consult a physician about the appropriate diet and vitamin consumption. The lack of energy being produced can cause fatigue; hypothyroidism also impacts the production of serotonin and for that reason has been linked to clinical depression.
Additional common symptoms for low levels of thyroid hormone include carpal tunnel syndrome, dry skin, and hair loss. In some people a hoarse voice develops that is deeper in tone. Many people also suffer loss of appetite and gain weight in spite of it. Because people who suffer from this disease often slide into it gradually, a long period of time may go by before it is diagnosed and proper medical steps are taken to provide thyroid support.
Hyperthyroidism is the opposite; this malfunction is characterized by an overproduction of thyroid hormones. The result is a heightened metabolic rate, which can cause unnaturally high body heat. It can also cause weight loss with no reduction in dietary consumption. Aching joints and hand tremors may occur due to this condition; in some patients the eyes seem to enlarge or bulge.
Insomnia and fatigue also characterize hyperthyroidism, and in many people a general nervousness sets in. A severe case of hyperthyroidism that goes untreated can make day to day living extremely difficult.
