Psoriasis is an uncomfortable and unsightly skin condition that occurs when there is an over-production of skin cells. There are three treatment modes: topical creams, oral medication and light therapy, all of which are meant to slow cell production, reduce itching and remove the plaque or scale that has formed. The topical treatments include corticosteroids of various strengths which are capable of reducing inflammation. Creams that include retinoids have also proven effective.
There are several forms of light therapy that employ ultraviolet rays or lasers. Oral medications include autoimmune treatments such as methotrexate, and oral retinoids that can treat severe psoriasis on a temporary basis.
