Probiotics

Probiotics are live organisms (bacteria) included in health food supplements that are thought to be helpful for specific metabolic functions.  There are many supplements marketed under the name probiotic defense; generally they consist of “friendly” bacteria blended into a fermented whole food base.

Probiotics were developed for the purpose of reintroducing helpful bacteria that improve intestinal balance and thus fight off bacteria associated with toxins.  Today the concept is being studied as a treatment for certain intestinal diseases including IBD.  One of the most common bacteria in a probiotic supplement produces lactic acid.
